DESCRIPTION: Length up 7 to 14mm. Also known as the Field Digger Wasp this is a somewhat long and thin species with a yellow and black coloration throughout. There is a yellow strip across the front of the thorax and the black abdomen bears two yellow bands. Females are larger than males. BEHAVIOUR: Nests in sandy soil, often in aggregations. The males feed on honeydew. DISTRIBUTION: Common throughout the UK. HABITAT: Heaths, woodland edges, dunes, waste areas and gardens. PERIOD: July to October. Single brooded.
